How many warm-up sets should I do?

It depends mainly on your working weight. Lighter working weights generally need fewer ramp-up sets. Heavier working weights usually benefit from a more gradual warm-up with progressively heavier loads and fewer reps.

Should warm-up sets tire you out?

No. Warm-up sets should prepare you for your working sets, not compete with them. As weight increases, reps generally decrease so you arrive at your working load ready, not fatigued.

Do warm-up sets count as working sets?

No. Warm-up sets are preparatory. Working sets are the primary training stimulus you are programming toward.

How close should my last warm-up be to my working weight?

Your final warm-up should prepare you for the working load without becoming another working set. A single rep slightly below working weight is often enough for heavier loads.

How long should I rest between warm-up sets?

Early warm-up sets can use short rests — often 30 to 60 seconds. As load approaches your working weight, a slightly longer rest of around 60 to 90 seconds is usually enough. You do not need full working-set rest between every warm-up.

Worked example

For 80 kg with a 20 kg bar, a sensible ramp is 20 kg × 10, then 50 kg × 5, 65 kg × 3 and 75 kg × 1 before your 80 kg working sets. Use the plate calculator links to load each weight.
